Syndicate 7th Birthday feat. LTJ Bukem
If you've been to any of the previous Syndicate anniversary parties, you'll know what to expect - packed to the roof with bass-infused mayhem with an atmosphere you'll only experience once a year. Blackie at the Yen Fetish Halloween party, 2010/10/30
Not much to add here: the annual Yen Fetish Halloween, a massive party full of freaky costumery and big beats. This year it's on the 30th of October, and Blackie will rotate the dnb discs from 3:30-5am. DJ lineup also includes Yangbing, Usami, X Lee, and Ouyang. There may still be some advance tickets available!
Find full info on the o2culture website, photos from last year here.
Update from the promoter:
Yen Fetish Halloween presale tickets are sold out! Door tickets will be available on the night, but due to safety concerns & capacity restrictions, presale ticket holders have priority entry. If you didn’t manage to get a presale ticket, you can still attend Yen Fetish.
We advise all those seeking door tickets to avoid arriving during peak time (11-1am) as those without presale tickets will need to queue. While we are excited by the unprecedented support for this Yen event & demand for tickets, we cannot exceed the venue capacity.
We will do our best to safely accommodate as many party goers as possible, and ask for your understanding should you be required to queue for a short time.

Syndicate Sessions at White Rabbit, April 10
*** ADDED LINK TO NEW SYNDICATE PODCAST APR 9, IT'S A LITTLE FURTHER DOWN THE PAGE BRUV ***
Good news: it looks like Beijing will be getting a monthly dnb event going again with the all-new Syndicate Sessions at White Rabbit.
To quote DJ Blackie (from a City Weekend interview):
Yes, we’ll be playing the second Saturday of every month. It’s a night across urban bass-heavy sounds—not just drum ‘n’ bass. We’ll start with slower, eclectic syncopated music—dubwise stuff— then bring it up. It’ll reach a peak late in the night, and then we’ll start to bring it down. We’ll also showcase a different DJ in the crew each night and build the music up to that specific set.
DJ Blackie ... so hot right now ... DJ Blackie. (He's playing a set at the Shackleton thing at Yugongyishan on Friday 2nd as well, by the way.)
The recent 6th birthday was massive, and with a similar lineup for this party you can no doubt expect a similar level of massive-ness. The first Syndicate Session is Saturday April 10, starts at 10pm, 50RMB on the door.
Set times
11:00-12:30: Elemental;
12:30-02:00: Slide;
02:00-04:00: Skywalker;
04:00-XX:XX: Blackie.

UPDATED: Syndicate 6th Birthday, Podcast
Holy jeez, The Syndicate is back!
After a 6-month absence, Beijing's purveyors of highest quality drums and lowest frequency bass, The Syndicate, are back with a menacing look in their eye. Having been responsible for bringing the biggest and baddest international stars to the capital, over the years The Syndicate have also been pushing boundaries on the local scene with Elemental and Slide being the only D&B DJs ever to have played on The Great Wall and with Blackie being voted City Weekend's DJ of the Year 2009. March 13th 2010 represents 6 years since the first ever Syndicate party and this special anniversary line-up promises to shake the White Rabbit to its fluffy little foundations.
Elemental (NZ), LYDNB (Tianjin), Kay C (HK) will be stepping up before Blackie and Slide (UK) take to the decks for a spectacular 3 hour back-to-back birthday set, featuring exclusive tracks specially produced for the occasion as well as the latest and most upfront DnB. Expect sample-scratching subsonic mayhem.

Hope for Haiti Concert
Blackie and Slide will play a dnb set at the Hope for Haiti charity concert, Wednesday February 3rd at Yugongyishan. 100% of the 50RMB entrance fee and 10% of the bar take will go to Partners in Health, a grassroots organisation that has been working on the ground in Haiti for 20 years.
Also on the lineup: The Verse, Afrokoko Roots, Meiwenti Sound, and Funk Fever.

Remiss with updates, here is a bit of late notice about your next chance to catch some dnb in Beijing.
Dnb-wise on this one it's all about Blackie with the prime slot; the other DJs are certainly not terrible, and when you add in about 3,000 people you find yourself a mad party. Get all the info (tickets, times, location) on the o2culture website.
Another download for yis to check - The Meltdown Years, by Jam One. Having been mixed in software, it's a little different in approach to the mixes usually linked off this site, but it means that there are no clangs in it. Also, it's 4 hours of all the biggest dnb tunes of the late 90s - visit beatplexity.com for tracklist and download link.
Riddim at Obiwan
Righty-o, this weekend--Friday night to be precise--you should be able to catch a dnb set as part of Club Obiwan's Riddim night.
Skywalker provides the meat in a sandwich otherwise made up of UK Funky and breaks. It appears to be free before 11pm (30RMB after that), and starts at 10pm. More info about Club Obiwan and this party is on the City Weekend website.
If you made it down to the Yen Halloween party on the 31st (or if you were curious but stayed home) you can have a look at the photos on their website - Yen Fetish Halloween 2009 photos.
And lastly, for your non-club-situation enjoyment:
- download the latest Syndicate Podcast - 51 minutes of tunes and chat with Dan and Blackie.
- this Random Movement podcast is also well worth a download, a very good mixture of smooth beats and not too much talking.
Yen Fetish Halloween / Syndicate Podcast
All right, if you would like to hear some dnb and gaze upon some outlandish costumery, check out this Saturday's Yen Fetish Halloween party at 706 Factory in the 798 Art District. Blackie is playing dnb on the night (3:30am-ish set), other DJs include Usami, Mickey Zhang, Dio, and Yang Bing. Tickets 80RMB in advance, 150RMB on the door (if available), more info (maps and what not) at www.o2culture.com.
As a prelude to that main event, download the latest Syndicate Podcast - 51 minutes of tunes and chat with Dan and Blackie.
Also on the 31st, the Timeout Halloween party at the Happy Valley theme park looks kind of interesting, and you'll find Blackie (or perhaps his body double) playing a dnb set there as well. More information about that can be found on the Timeout website. Their description of the: Rocking DJs, 6-8RMB beers, rides and fairground games await in the Ant Kingdom area of Happy Valley - all for 60RMB!.
The theme park closes at midnight, Blackie's set is 11-12 9:30-10:30.
DnB stage at the Zoo Festival / DNB at Obiwan
This month's second big Modern Sky event is called the Zoo Festival, and on Day 2 the Cosmo Yellow Stage gets taken over by drum and bass DJs Slide, Kay C, and LYDNB, with Slide to be accompanied by an MC whose name will most likely be Terra-D.
Day 2, to be precise, is Saturday October 17th, and in addition to the drum and bass action you also get DJ Spooky, plus more Beijing and Shanghai musicians, DJs, and VJs.
The festival is being held at the Haidian Exhibition Hall in Haidan Park, and from what I can tell, tickets cost between 80 and 150RMB, depending on which day you go. More information (Chinese language) at http://zoo.modernsky.com.
Bonus info: this month's first big Modern Sky event takes place from October 4-7 in Chaoyang Park, and was to be headlined by the likes of The Buzzcocks, Shonen Knife, and Radio 4. All international acts have since been cancelled, there will still be two stages worth of local acts if you're interested.
More bonus info: Club Obi-wan over there at Xihai have a little electronic action going with a party they call Riddim, and on October 16 (that's a Friday) you can check dnb sets by DJ Skywalker (11:30pm) and DJ Slide (3am). In between those they have DJs playing breaks and UK Funky - more info, plus directions to the club, at www.clubobiwan.com.cn, flyer below.
Also upcoming
The annual Yen Fetish Halloween - tickets 80RMB in advance, 150RMB on the door (if available), more info at www.o2culture.com.
Drum and bass on an aircraft carrier?!
So, it seems that for 250RMB (or maybe 300RMB) you can travel to Tianjin and back to rock out on an aircraft carrier.
From the same people who brought you the 'Great Wall Beach Party' series of outdoor events, comes a rave that is unprecedented worldwide. This is the first ever party to be thrown on a real-life Aircraft carrier. Located in Tianjin, a couple of hours outside Beijing, the Aircraft carrier is anchored in the ocean and it's vast, flat landing bay offers an amazingly unique space for thousands of people to party all night long on. The Great Wall Beach Party's DJs are being brought together once more to provide the necessary beats and bass to make this party an unforgettable one. All you need to do, is book your ticket, jump on one of the deluxe air-conditioned coaches provided and dance like a maniac to be part of history in the making!
It's on Saturday September 19th, and is being organised by the same people as the Great Wall Beach Party, so no doubt the vibe will be similar. Same goes for the DJ lineup, which follows:
Mickey Zhang (Yen, Morse)
Blackie ( The Syndicate)
Patrick Yu (ABCDJ)
El-Mar
Suki
Ou Yang
Spark (djmag)
Ludo V
Dj Carlo
QQ
It's just Blackie representing dnb, but if this sort of party tickles your fancy, call one of these phone numbers and get some more information

Thing of the week
More mix dowload action: Noisa with Dynamite MC at Lowlands Festival, August 21 2009 (dnbshare.com download). I guess 'sick' would be the best description of the type of tunes featured, maybe worth a 'fully sikh' if you're an Antipodean.
Blackie Mix / Bungle at Yugongyishan
Blackie has done a mix for Hong Kong's Kongkrete Bass, and it's available for download in two flavours - vanilla MP3, and 'special' M4A. Get your download and the tracklist direct from the Kongcrete Bass website.
In the mix there are a few tracks by Brazilan Bungle, who will be visiting Beijing to play at Yugongyishan on September the 4th. Bungle has released more than a few big tunes, in a solo style as well as in collaboration with Marky - for more information about Bungle, check his Myspace page, http://www.myspace.com/bungledj.
July/August dnb Action
OK UPDATE, Total Science on August 7th, now at China Doll.
Ri-i-i-i-i-i-ght, on the menu for consumers of the drum and bass food group:
Blackie and MC Terra D at Desert Dance, July 18th It's not actually in the desert, but rather the Desert Dance is an event that aims to raise awareness of desertification and water shortages in Beijing. Blackie and Mr D will be on from 1am-2am. The venue is somewhat obscure, but there's plenty of other stuff going on as well as DJs - check the organiser's website for the full run down - Desert Dance information.
The Desert Dance party was originally going to be at White Rabbit, but according to some reports White Rabbit is closed until further notice. Say it ain't so, Zhou.
Apart for being bad news in general, that puts a question mark next to a BIG party that was planned there for August 7. Here's hoping that our dear Rabbit reopens/renovates/relocates in time, or that the Syndicate find another venue for Total Science, who are sufficiently boss to have their own Wikipedia entry - check it (and spot Goldie in the background of the photo). Also, they were featured on DNB Arena TV, you can check that interview at muzu.tv - a good bit of chat, and some big tunes in the background.
Accompanied by trigger-finger gestures and a little screwface, a new episode of the Syndicate Podcast enters the chamber. Now entering their second year of broadcasting, Syndicate Podcast #12 is an hour-long special featuring the dulcet tones of D-Rail, the mellifluous vocal stylings of Blackie, as well as special cameos from Terra-D, Dan's beard, and Elemental's long-since-chopped kungfu topknot ponytail thing. Oh yes, looking for a download link were you? download Syndicate Podcast 12
And now, the rumours: Brazil's Bungle towards the end of August; and a return visit by Klute, playing Yugongyishan at the beginning of September.
For Thing of the Week we go to the archives - photos from the Yen on the Wall Party in 2005. It's almost 4 years ago that the wild orgy left the Great Wall in mess, and tears.
Great Wall Beach Party
So, information about the Great Wall Beach Party is scarce - their site still shows last year's information, as does their Myspace, but! I have heard that people have bought tickets and will be attending on July the 4th, so there you go. Best source of info right now is the Clubzone website, and it looks like you can buy tickets from that site. There's a bit of info on the City Weekend website and also the Beijinger website. Otherwise, hard to say what exactly is going on. Find out exact details by calling 13810785362 after 6pm.
Drum and bass-wise, Blackie has got a set there, and may or may not be playing around 3am; other DJs on the lineup are Mickey Zhang (Yen, Morse), Patrick Yu (ABCDJ), El-Mar, DJ SUKI, DJ Carlo, QQ, and Ou Yang.
Syndicate at White Rabbit
Flyer says it all, innit?!
The Great Wall Beach party (featuring a dnb set courtesy of Blackie) is on July the 4th, information is kinda thin at the mo', but the basic beach party info is on the Clubzone website.
Yen 5th Anniversary
All right then, a massive party this Saturday night, with dnb represented in prime time (1:15am-2:30am) on the main floor courtesy of Mr. Blackie. Expect a ridiculous amount of people to turn out for this party, so get tickets early, and get there early if you don't want to spend an hour in the queue.
As a brief summary:
Advance tickets available for 80RMB from Apertivo, Lush, and the Clubzone.cn website
Limited VIP tickets available from Apertivo for 200RMB (incl. 100RMB of drink tickets)

Supported by Upstepper and Syndicate DJs, Kode 9 is playing at White Rabbit on Thursday June 4th. It's 60RMB on the door, and will start 10ish. The White Rabbit website is not loading atm, so find more information on the websites of City Weekend and The Beijinger.
Lineup
Dan (Upstepper Sound)
Steve Barker (BBC, Upstepper Sound)
Kode 9 (Hyperdub) UK
DJ Slide (Syndicate)
There's a new Syndicate podcast on the way as well, with Dio doing a guest set - keep an eye out for that later in the week.
And here's the promised podcast, plus a bonus!

DNB Allstars / Kode 9
Here's the flyer for the party at White Rabbit on the 22nd - it's kinda small on the page, click it to view a bigger version.
Two of the finest from Shanghai's underground, as well as an unspecified number of Beijing's double-dropping deck-wrecking dnb dangermen. I like the sound of that. From 11pm, Friday May 22, White Rabbit - 50RMB on the door, free for ladies before 1am.
Also, we got: Kode 9 (yoish!) at White Rabbit early June, and DJ Blackie has a set at the Yen 5th Birthday on June 19.
Beijing Upcoming DNB
Updates few and far between at the moment, but here's what we've got coming up in Beijing drum and bass:
Siesta / MC Cha Cha / Syndicate Allstars at White Rabbit, May 22
White Rabbit is still down to one room; on the 22nd of May the Syndicate are taking the whole thing over, and inviting Siesta and MC Cha Cha up from Shanghai to assist. Blackie and Elemental were down to Shanghai to play late April, so we'll call this the second leg of the Shanghai/Beijing matchup - let's see how the ladies of Shanghai represent.
50RMB on the door, 11 til late, White Rabbit (flyer/more info coming soon).
And that seems to be it for the moment. There are portents of more visitors from afar but we shall await confirmation before spilling the beans.

DNB AT THE STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL
The Modern Sky Strawberry Music Festival is on this weekend and on Saturday the 2nd the electronic stage has got stacks of dnb on, starting from 3:30 with LYDNB, followed by Kay C, and then Blackie. Sound good? This year the festival is in Tongzhou, way out east - to get there you've got to take the Line 1 Subway out east to the Tongzhou Beiyuan stop and find a taxi or a Modern Sky shuttle bus. You can find more information on the Modern Sky website or the City Weekend website

April and upcoming
All right, fortnightly (ooerr) update, right now.
Firstly, lots of gaps in the site where Youtube videos should be if you're living in China, sorry about that.
Next-ly, a bit of dnb action for you, this week:
Thursday 16th at SuperGanbei in the Ullens Center, 798 Art District, SuperGanbei welcomes The Syndicate
Constantly pushing the boundaries into unchartered rhythmical territory, Drum n Bass moguls The Syndicate bring you the deeper side of DnB, featuring Slide and D-Rail
Thursday 16th April @ 9pm
30rmb on the door
Info about the venue at www.ucca.org.cn (not www.ucca.org!), or call 13552498776 for info.
Then, on the 18th, White Rabbit are doing a night called Spinette with gal DJs and VJs from Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Beijing. Of interest to dnb fans will be Nico from Shanghai, who is up to play a set of heavy dnb. Also playing: Ekki (breakbeat), QQ (electro-y/house-y I guess), with Dr. Marula working the visuals. 40RMB on the door before 1AM, 60RMB after that.
Last-ly, but not least-ly, on the 25th at White Rabbit, A Bass Odyssey, featuring Liquid Wicked, a live dub/dubstep act from France, as well as dnb from the Syndicate, reggae from Upstepper and the Meiwenti Soundsystem, and Mael's farewell set. Mark it in your diaries, this will be the big one this month.
EZ Rollers / Podcast
First up, it was a big party at White Rabbit last Friday - Big up Mael, Pinch, et al. If you missed it, you can still catch some dubstep vibes by downloading the most recent Syndicate Podcast, which featured a dubstep set and chat from Mael.
Mael is leaving Beijing in May, which makes April "The (last) Month of Mael" - so make the most of your chances to see him mix while he's still about. On Friday April 4 he's playing at Tango for the A Guy Called Gerald gig - read more about that on the City Weekend website. A Guy Called Gerald plays techno-y these days, but if you check his discography you'll see a fair bit of proto-dnb - could be a very interesting set.
And also: SOS bring one of the EZ Rollers over to play a set at Yugongyishan on April 3rd. EZ Rollers have been responsible for some big tunes; perhaps their best-known is Walk This Land, featured on the Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels soundtrack. So, it all starts at 9pm, and for your 80RMB you get a DJ set from EZ Rollers, live sets from Delacrew and Meng Qi, and DJ sets from D-Rail and DJ Bu. (50RMB presale tickets available from Monkey Style, Luga's in Sanlitun, and the WELIVEINBEIJING office in Wudaokou.)
27th & 28th May, Syndicate Podcast
27th and 28th of May ... that's Pinch / Syndicate / Baicai at White Rabbit (Friday 27th), and Blackie playing a set at Yen White (Saturday 28th). Flyers and info for those were added to the site last week, if you don't mind scrolling down a little ... there you go.
And as an introduction to the Pinch gig, the latest Syndicate Podcast focuses on dubstep, with Mael in the mix. Download Syndicate Bonus Podcast 3.
The parties on Friday and Saturday feature mixed lineups with a variety of musical styles on offer: For Friday night the obvious highlight is Pinch (big-time dubstep), but you've also got Steve Barker and Mael doing their thing, Elemental and Slide playing dnb, and Flo Eysler and Big Max playing house-y techno-y. The main attraction on Saturday night for dnb fans will of course be Blackie, also on the lineup for that one are Yangbing, Eddie Lv, Ben Huang, and J Schwarz.
Pinch / Yen White
Syndicate and Baicai Dubstep Special, featuring DJ Pinch (Tectonic/Planet Mu/UK), with Mael, Elemental, Slide (Syndicate DNB), Flo Eysler and Big Max (Baicai), as well as Steve Barker. DJ Zinc is in town to play this Friday night (13/3/2009), and although he's not playing a dnb set it's still worth a look - he's an amazing DJ no matter what he plays. Plus, some of the Syndicate's most handsomest DJs (Mael [dubstep], D-Rail [J-Tek], Blackie [D&B]) are on support duties, as well as sometime-bootymeister-of-house Patrick Yu, and Haobuhao VJ on the visuals. 50RMB advance tickets, 80RMB on the door, from 9:30 on Friday March 13, 2009 at Yugongyishan

The Rest of February
Righty-o then, what have we got? Connection at White Rabbit, and the Syndicate 5th Birthday feat. Commix.
Connection at White Rabbit, Friday 21st February
"30 top local DJs & VJs unite for an epic celebration of Beijing’s finest quality underground dance music. A full-spectrum showcase of the local electronica scene with an artist line-up that includes members from Acupuncture Records, BaiCai, Blink Events, Deep Space Mafia, Musicology, S.O.S., The Syndicate, Yellow, Yen."
Last weekend White Rabbit couldn't open the second (White) room because of a fire code crackdown. (If you've no idea why there might be a fire code crackdown, click here for some photos.) If this extra attention continues this week they may have trouble squeezing the 30 DJs and VJs into the one room. If I can find out either way I will post further info.
From the Syndicate, Mael, D-Rail, and Blackie are playing, and you might also catch a bit of dnb from the SOS crew. 40RMB on the door before midnight, 70RMB after, 10pm-8am.
Syndicate 5th Birthday Party feat. Commix
Oh yes, the 5th birthday party ... sure to be a smasher. Last year the Syndicate had Logistics and Cyantific for the 4th birthday; this year they bring both of Commix to play at Yugongyishan. The party is on Friday 27th of February at Yugongyishan, 50RMB advance tickets are available from Yugongyishan and Lush, or you can pay 80RMB on the door. Will have a lot more info about this party in the next week, and hopefully a few ticket giveaways for the mailing list massif.
Thing of the week: there's a dBridge and Instramental Autonomic Podcast available for download, a mix on the deeper side of things dnb-wise with some extras in there as well. This was found by the one like D-Rail on breaksblog.biz (go there for tracklisting, etc.), and you can download it from dnbshare.com. The mix is described as "Futuristic glitchy, detroity, dangerous, eclectic beats selected by dBridge and Instra:mental," so if that sounds like it would be up yer alley, get on ze download Chico.
Syndicate vs. Baicai, tonight, Feb 13
White Rabbit can't open the downstairs room until 1ish tonight, so that means the drum and bass will start around then, instead of 11.
Syndicate vs. Baicai, Feb 13
Syndicate vs. Baicai - hot and steamy and creamy?! Ooerr missus! Friday February 13, 50RMB on the door (half price with Baicai family card I think), 11pm til late late late. On the Syndicate side of things, in the downstairs room, LYDNB (aka Mr Tianjin), Kay C (Mr Hong Kong), Slide (Mr Muscle), and Elemental (Mr Maverick). More DJs TBC.
UPCOMING!
Syndicate 5th Birthday featuring Commix, Friday February 27th at Yugongyishan. 80RMB door sales, 50RMB advance tickets available from Lush and Yugongyishan, much more info coming soon.
Here's the thing of the week - Mr Maverick, by Calibre, on the Youtube.
Syndicate vs. Baicai
First post of 2009, and not a minute too soon!
Syndicate Podcast Number Nine - I think you want to download it! (approx. 40MB, 45min, hosted by Blackie and D-Rail)
Yes, flyer says it all really - more of the same (great, amazing, superlative) Baicai and Syndicate house-y/techno-y vs dnb action. Think it's the Syndicate's turn to take the upstairs room at ye ol' White Rabbit this time, so you'll only have to walk down one flight of stairs to get to the dnb. Saturday January 17, 50RMB on the door (half price with Baicai family card I think), 11-breakfast!
Thing(s) of the week!
This week, for you, links to two mix downloads.
1) old skool badman Doc Scott with MC Justyce, a DJ set recorded in November 2008 - download link | tracklist at breaksblog.biz
2) new skool badman Alix Perez with MC Ruthless, a DJ set recorded at BBC Radio 1's 1Xtra Big Weekend 2008 - download link | tracklist at breaksblog.biz (live mix starts 18 minutes in.)

NYE / Yen Countdown / In Bass We Trust
Reporting from the Xmas Eve Jungle Bells at White Rabbit last Wednesday: it was big, fun, and went til very late. Ready for another big Wednesday?
No doubt the biggest party this Wednesday will be the Yen Countdown. Advance tickets cost 80RMB (if any still available); door sales 150RMB (including a free drink); VIP tickets run 250RMB and include 100RMB of drink tickets (available from Apertivo).
Full lineup is Donald Summer, Ouyang, Dio, Yangbing, and Elemental, plus Mickey Zhang will play a live set, accompanied by his brother on the guzheng (kind of like a harp, but horizontal). The dnb on the night will be supplied by Elemental, who gets the closing set (3:30am - 5am)
You can read an interview with some of these DJs on the Cityweekend website, and get more info on the o2culture website (here's a map as well).
And then,
In Bass We Trust: Breaks and dnb at White Rabbit on NYE, with Will Streetwise and Richie Balboa playing dnb/breaks, plus dnb sets from Delacrew (live PA) and Kay C. 50RMB on the door, starts at 10pm. If you've been to the Yen Countdown, you can use your ticket stub to get in for free after 4am.
Xmas / NYE Flyers
Flyeration for the nation: Yen Countdown; White Rabbit Breakbeat and DNB NYE, now with added Xmas Eve.
Syndicate / Baicai - Jungle Bells / Wish You A Merry Cabbage. On the Syndicate side of this I can say you'll be hearing Jungle, old-skool breakbeat hardcore, plus more upfront beats from the likes of D-Rail, Elemental, Mael, and more. 60RMB on the door (half-price w/ Baicai family card), 10pm-6am, Dec 24th 2008.
The Yen guys are predicting that exactly 200 more people will attend this years' Yen Countdown compared to their NYE party last year. The total attendance last year was 3,500. My calculator says 200 plus 3,500 equals BIG. Get more info on the o2culture website.
Breaks and dnb at White Rabbit on NYE, with Will Streetwise and Richie Balboa playing dnb/breaks, plus dnb sets by Beijing-based mateys Delacrew (live PA) and Kay C. They'll be doing a live broadcast of the night on NSF radio, but if you live in Beijing why not get down there in person?
If you didn't download the latest Syndicate podcast (#8) already, go get it! Syndicate Podcast #8 download link.
Podcast downloads / Xmas / New Years
Two podcast downloads now available for your listening pleasure:
The mythical lost episode Syndicate vs. Tagteam Records co-cast. First half-hour is mostly chat with Syndicate and Tagteam dudes (www.tagteamrecords.com, a Beijing-based ... I think ... record label) and an Arrows Made of Desire in-studio performance, second half hour is a DJ Blackie mix. Warning: contains excessive wise-acring, swearing, husky voice, and reference to male beauty products. Download Syndicate/Tagteam co-cast
And, Syndicate podcast #8, an hour of beats and chat with Blackie, D-Rail, Dan, and Mr Terra-D. Download it here.
Xmas/NYE
Your choice for Xmas and NYE dnb action is relatively simple so far: Syndicate vs. Baicai at White Rabbit on the 24th, and a dnb set by Elemental at the Yen Countdown on the 31st. More info about all that next week, my dudes.
Syndicate vs. Baicai XI / Podcast
Here we've got news of the next edition of the monthly Syndicate vs. Baicai party - same Bat-time, same Bat-channel ... errr .. same Bat-price, same Bat-cave. Different Bat-lineup though, WHAMMO! So yeah, November 29th at White Rabbit from 11pm. 50RMB on the door, Syndicate DNB downstairs in the Red Room (D-Rail, Slide, Mael, LYDNB, Shiva), Baicai house-y/techno-y further downstairs in the White Room (Flo Eysler, Cavalor). Be warned that this lot are planning something ridiculous for Christmas Eve.
Also fresh for this week, another edition of the Syndicate podcast, this time featuring a guest mix and chat from DJ Slide. Well worth a listen, download it here.
Terminal Urban Room
Your drum and bass fix for this weekend comes on Friday night (2008-11-14) as part of the 2-venue Terminal party.
The venues are White Rabbit and Block 8, and the interesting part is the "Urban Room" at White Rabbit, featuring dnb sets from Blackie and Slide, plus a reggae/dub/dubstep set from Damon and Mael.
The White Rabbit part of the event begins at midnight, the rest is at Block 8 from 9pm. Tickets are 100RMB, and get you into both venues (you get a shot of Jagermeister as well, woo!). Presales can be had for 60RMB at various venues, find more information on the o2culture website
Hello, November
- 2 sets of Goldie photos - set A (16 photos), from Jon Smith; set B (44 photos), from Oak Taylor-Smith
- Photos from DJ Krust at After 5, courtesy of Oak Taylor-Smith
And what else ... There should be another episode of the Syndicate Podcast coming next week, and then not too much until November 29th, when we get another Syndicate vs Baicai at White Rabbit, check back for updates on those.
Halloween / DJ Krust
Yes now, hope yis didn't miss Goldie - it was hu-u-u-u-u-u-ge! We're on to the next lot straight away, with DJ Krust on the 1st, and a little dnb action at the Yen Fetish Halloween party on the 31st.
But first, a little audio message from the Golden One:
Loading audio player
Right nice!
November 1st, DJ Krust at After 5 bar. 50RMB door sales (inc. a free tube of Jagermeister), 2 rooms of dnb and funk/reggae/house/hiphop/etc at new venue After 5 on the Solana bar street, close by to White Rabbit. More Krust info can be found at the DJ Krust Myspace and on Wikipedia
Here's the lineup for both rooms: Krust, Kay C, Elemental, and D-Rail in the main room; The-one-like-Dan, Slide, Wrong'un (AKA All Night Wong, 2-hours Wong, etc., etc.), Mael, Steve Barker, and more, playing reggae, house, hiphop, and whatever.
After 5 might seem a little hard to find, but it's not actually too difficult. If you know where White Rabbit is, just head south a bit from there and you'll soon see the massive Solana Mall on the west side of the street. Follow the road along the north end of the mall down towards the back (or get your taxi to go down there) until you see the billboard advertising All Star/Bling/etc, turn right along there, head on past All Star and there you go. The other way to find the Solana Mall is to head north from the west gate of Chaoyang Park. If that's all a little obtuse, the All Star website has a decent map on there - After 5 is at the south end of the Death Star-looking thing on the right side of the Solana complex map. (Or try this map.)
The night before Krust is the annual Yen Fetish Halloween party--always massive, always crazy. This year Blackie is getting a set, so you'll get a good dose of dnb alongside house, techno, and breakbeat from the other Yen regulars. Get more info about that at City Weekend, the o2culture site is coming up with warnings about malicious software and I wouldn't wish that on you.
IMPORTANT! for party animals keen to hit both of these - take your Yen Halloween ticket along to the Krust gig before midnight, and get free entry!
Just released, a bonus episode of the Syndicate Podcast, featuring a tech-house-y set from Mickey Zhang - download it here
And last of all, the Thing of the week - Krust & Saul Williams 'Coded Language' music video, a classic from the Krust LP of the same name.
Syndicate/Baicai / Goldie & Lowqui / DJ Krust / Podcast
Two big internationals coming up, as well as the 10th Syndicate vs Baicai party at White Rabbit - read on for more!
But first! The latest episode of the mess they're calling the Syndicate Podcast - click here to get it (right-click>Save As on PC, control-click on a Mac [I think])
Right-o, on October the 18th at White Rabbit (where else, really), is the 10th time that Baicai and the Syndicate have made sweet, sweet musical love. Same deal as always, ie. it will be awesome, feature a range of DJs from each crew, cost 50RMB to get in, and continue from 11 until 7am or so.
And here we've Goldie & MC Lowqui, at Yugongyishan on Saturday October 25. In brief: presales from Lush and Yugongyishan for 80RMB, 100RMB door sales, starts 9pm on October 25 and may finish early due to Yugongyishan's neighbours. Goldie and Lowqui will be on early at 11:30 - make sure you get there on time! You can get a lot more info--English and Chinese--on the special Goldie/Lowqui minisite.
The flyer for the DJ Krust gig as a teaser - Nov 1, 50RMB door sales (inc. a free tube of Jagermeister), 2 rooms of dnb and funk/reggae/house/hiphop/etc at new venue After 5 on the Solana bar street, close by to White Rabbit. If you've not heard of DJ Krust (come on!) you may have heard of his good friends Roni Size, DJ Die, Reprazent with whom he won the Mercury Prize for best album back in the day. He'll be the first Full Cycle crew member to make it to China as far as I can tell, and Full Cycle was one of the biggest and best labels in drum and bass ever. He's released a lot of big tunes, going back all the way to the mid-90s, plus a couple of albums for XL and Talkin' Loud. More info about this to come.
Ok, Thing of the Week* going strong 2 weeks in a row - this week, a link to an interview with Grooverider, who just got out of jail in Dubai after being caught with a roach in his pocket at the airport. Rude! Here's the link to the interview on the BBC website, this thing of the week comes to you courtesy of the one like DJ D-Rail, the Deck Chairman, good looking out there.
October Action
Quite a bit of stuff to update here, and plenty for the drums- and bass-loving crew out and about in Beijing. Read on to find out more about Hermitude, Syndicate vs Baicai #10, Goldie/MC Lowqui, and DJ Krust, oh yeah. "Thing of the Week" makes another appearance as well, in the form of a mix download. Sorry to all email list crew, the emailing will resume its regular scheduling again soon!
Right then, in order of date:
Hermitude, coming all the way from Australia for a visit, are playing White Rabbit on Friday October 10th. From the flyer:
Having played alongside music visionaries DJ Krush, RJD2, Kid Koala, and DJ Kentaro, these Aussies' signature sound takes instrumental hip hop's smooth influences, flips and cooks them up into sets of riding electro vibes, funk beats and stomp-your-feet drum n bass.
Sounds interesting, and the promoters reckon they'll play a decent wedge of drum and bass. Also playing on the night are Mael, and Deep Space Mafia, it'll cost ya 50RMB to get in, and you can get a bit more info about them at http://www.myspace.com/hermitude, and by reading an interview with one of them on the City Weekend website
Next in line, also at White Rabbit (where else, really), is the 10th time that Baicai and the Syndicate have kissed and made up after the monthly torrid lovers tiff. That will be on Saturday October the 18th, it will cost you 50RMB to get in, and I'll get the lineup and flyer posted up here later this week.
Then--woo! woo! woo! woo!--Goldie & MC Lowqui at Yugongyishan on Saturday October 25. I've noticed that The Beijinger has the date down for the 26th, don't listen to those foo's - it's definitely the 25th. Again, flyer and more info to come, but it's looking like it's going to be more than a little ruckus. On the lineup--besides the Golden One and Lowqui--there's the Beijing Live Hiphop Experience coming down to play a set of live funk and hiphop, and back to back sets from Blackie and Elemental, and D-Rail and Mael. Yugong has had more than a little trouble with their neighbours recently, so this party is going to start nice and early: Beijing Live Hiphop Experience playing 9:30-10:30; Elemental and Blackie on 10:30-11:30; Goldie and Lowqui on at 11:30; and then Mael and D-Rail to play lasties. Will have the flyer up soon, and also a page with plenty more info.
For now, just remember the date--25th October--and that you'll be able to pick up advance tickets about town for 80RMB, or pay 100RMB on the door.
Now, the Thing of the Week* - seeing as Goldie will be in town, how about a download of his BBC Essential mix? It's from April of this year, and is super-bad - get your download and tracklist from www.newmixes.com. If that's not working for any reason, you can find more download links at the impeccable www.breaksblog.biz
* management reserves the right as to the definition of the word 'week' in this case.
And lastly, Bristol/Full Cycle/Talkin' Loud/Reprazent legend and all-round don DJ Krust will be giving Beijing a taste of science on November the 1st. This looks like an interesting party: a new venue in the Solana Mall complex, Jagermeister sponsorship (oooerr!), and a dnb room, a chillout room, and a patio (which may be a little chilly by the time November gets here). Much more info to come for this in the next few weeks.
Yen After / Goldie & Lowqui
OK, what manner of dnb action have we got coming up?
This week we've got what seems to be the Yen After parties that were planned for the original rescheduling of the MIDI Festival, before the rescheduled dates got rescheduled. (will be mid-October.now is what I hear) Of interest to drum and bass fans is the Thursday-nighter (October 2nd) at White Rabbit, with Blackie, Elemental, and Slide playing dnb in the downstairs room. Looks like it will cost 50RMB to get in, more all-night action at White Rabbit.
And then, a big one - Goldie & MC Lowqui at Yugongyishan on October 25th. There's going to be presales for this one (80RMB), door sales will cost 100RMB, and I'll have more information about all that some time next week.
Mala didn't make it last Friday (something about a visa, do you need a visa to get into China?), but if you still have a hankering for a bit of dubstep you could download the newest Syndicate Podcast, which features a good lashing of dubstep courtesy of DJ Mael - download it here.
Mala / MIDI / Syndicate Podcast #5
All right my dudes, have not updated yis for a bit. Here's something for you then!
A proper big'un by any definition - two rooms of dubstep, drum and bass, dub, dancehall, and house and techno, guest starring Mala of Digital Mysticz, plus DJs from the Syndicate, Baicai, and Upstepper crews, and there's extra guest action as well.
So, get your ass to White Rabbit on Friday September 26th, pay your 60RMB on the door, settle in for a big night night of bass and whatnot.
On the dubstep side of things you get Mala and Mael; Blackie, DRail, Slyde, and DJ Asayo go drum and bass-wise; techno and house from the Baicai boys Donald Summer and Mr Soon; and then dub and dancehall courtesy of the good ol' Upstepper Soundsystem.
Get ready for all that malarkey by downloading the newest Syndicate Podcast, this time featuring a good lashing of dubstep courtesy of the stenchy Frenchy DJ Mael - download it here.
Also, hold up while I figure out when/if the MIDI Festival is going to be on soon (and there is the Modern Sky Festival too, but seems like not much dnb happening there)
Thing of the week / etc
Fresh for September, the thing of the week!*
This week, a Youtube video featuring Noisa's Messiah remix (and synced up japery)
Oh-h-h-h-h-h, lawd-d-d-d-d-d-d
And don't forget:
Syndicate vs. Baicai 'Comeback Special,' White Rabbit, Saturday September 13th (more info a little way down the page)
Mala (Digital Mystikz) at White Rabbit, September 26th (more details TBC),
Syndicate podcast 4, go get it if you haven't already!
Plus, if you happen to be in Shenzhen this weekend, you can check some dnb at 25th Floor (or is it True Colors club?) on Friday September 5th - 3 DJs, 10-late. Send email here for more info.
* 'Thing' may or may not be weekly, definition of 'thing' may vary!
Drums Festival / Syndicate vs. Baicai
All right, two things coming up for yis:
The Drummer Festival at Star Live, while technically not a dnb event, may still be of interest to those of you who like drums. Mico from Junglecat is involved, and they'll be playing a set up in there. It's at StarLive (next to Tango) on August 31st, starts at 8pm, advance and student tickets cost 30RMB, otherwise it's 40RMB on the door. Flyer, address, phone number and more info at www.thestarlive.com
The Syndicate vs. Baicai 'Comeback Special' takes place at (where else?) White Rabbit on Saturday September 13th - 'Comeback Special' as in a lot of the Baicai Crew who were banished mysteriously absent (:P) over the Olympics period are back, and also because the Syndicate welcome the return of DJ Slide, well known for causing dnb-type big trouble in little Beijing around 2004/5/6.
It will be 50RMB on the door, starts 11ish, and White Rabbit will have both rooms open (Baicai in the Purple Room, Syndicate downstairs in the White Room)
And still no idea about that Sunday's on Top thing ...
Late August / September dnb action in Beijing
First, a plug for the latest Syndicate podcast - right-click or click download or stream the @%#* out of it, oh yeah.
And then, so yeah, like, apparently Blackie is playing at Sunday's on Top at Yin Bar, but it's like *totally* not confirmed. If it's going on it will be the last Sunday of August, which, according to my calendar, is the 31st. I can neither confirm nor deny that it will actually happen, but if I find out either way I will post it up. More info about the possibility down the page a bit.
September is looking mighty hot so far - the Syndicate vs. Baicai 'Welcome Back Special' at White Rabbit on September the 13th, and then another lashing of dubstep ru-u-u-u-u-u-udeness with Mala of Digital Mystikz visiting Beijing to bust it up alongside local dnb and dubstep DJs (also White Rabbit, September 25th, check Mala Myspace for info about him).
Beijing DNB Action in August 2008
Long time no update! Sorry about that, it's a been a combination of no time to make updates, and nothing to make updates about ... if that makes sense ... I think it does ...
Anyway, for those still in Beijing, those visiting Beijing (ahoy!), and those hoping to get back to Beijing after sorting out another visa, I bring news of the dnb action in Beijing for August.
But before you read about that, start downloading the new Syndicate podcast! - right-click > Save As to download (substitute equivalent for Mac users), or click it to stream (your mileage may vary) - download Syndicate Podcast 4
First up, merry pranksters The Syndicate get in on the oh-hey-it's-the-Olympics action with Golden Greats at White Rabbit on Saturday the 9th. DJs on the night are Blackie, D-Rail, Elemental, Mael, LYDNB, and Japanese import XXXXX, with MC Terra-D plus others speaking into the microphone at opportune times. Music-wise, it's mostly straight-up dnb, with a little dubstep and old-school jungle thrown in for good measure.
50RMB will get you inside, it kicks off 11pm, and we'll see how White Rabbit's late-night tendencies fare against the rumoured 2am no-fun-allowed curfew. You can get directions to the club on the City Weekend White Rabbit page.
And then, later in the month (date TBC), Blink Events' popular Sunday's on Top series has moved to Yin Bar, and Blackie will be doing the musical equivalent of going on like a drunken uncle at a wedding and playing dnb amidst the regular house beats provided by Patrick Yu. Not sure where Yin Bar is, but I hear it's got a very nice rooftop. So that'll be on a Sunday, obviously, and like I say I'll let you know the date when I find out. The Sunday's on Top parties things normally start around 4pm and have been known to go on until Monday morning - you might find more information about it on the Blink website.
Greening the Beige 2008 / Kemukujara
Greening the Beige Opening Night July 11th
"Greening the Beige (www.greeningthebeige.org) is an eco-minded art collective aiming to green the urban culture of Beijing. In order to do this, they've inducted The Syndicate's very own Blackie for his assistance on the decks for his alternative energy resources. Blackie goes green on the opening night of GtB08 at Yu Gong Yi Shan (www.yugongyishan). 50 rmb general / 30 rmb students."
This can be roughly translated as "Blackie is playing a dnb set at the opening party of Greening the Beige 2008, Friday July 11th, at Club Yugongyishan." His set is at 2am, but the opening party begins at 8:30 with speeches, performances, photo exhibitions, and a short film, before getting to the DJs (Patrick Yu, Flo Eysler, Mr Soon, Blackie). 50RMB to get in (30RMB for students).
Greening the Stage July 12th
On the Saturday night there's more Greening the Beige action at Yugongyishan - one of the bands playing is Junglecat, well known for their stylistic mashup of musical influences. They've got a few tunes in a drum and bass style, and their drummer can certainly pull off dnb beats at high tempo. If that sounds like something you'd like, get down there and check it - they're on at 10pm, there are speeches, short films, and trick-biking before that, another band after, and photo exhibitions to look at as well. 50RMB to get in (30RMB for students).
Greening the Beige is a week-long collection of events with a green theme (Photo and painting exhibitions, installations, short films, talks & lectures, and plenty more), held at a variety of venues around Beijing. You can find out lots more at their website www.greeningthebeige.org. Get out and have a look, interesting stuff organised by good people.
Busy night on Friday, with some dnb sets from recent arrivals to Beijing at Club Entero. 30RMB to get in (includes a free drink), dnb sets from Lydnb of Tianjin, and (rumoured) DJ Asayo from Japan. Club Entero is at 1 Xinyuan Li, Xindong Lu. I think Xinyuan Li is the thin street that runs between Chunxiu Lu and Xindong Lu, north end of the alley with Red Rose and Alpha. You can call 13621350904 for more info about the place, there are DJs playing funk, reggae, and techno on the night as well..
THE BUG vs. SYNDICATE vs. BAICAI
In short, Ninjatune and Rephlex Records recording artist The Bug is touring to promote his new CD London Zoo; he's making a stop at White Rabbit on Friday June 4th to play a set of his ragga/dubstep/crazy-shit music; and he's been thrown right in the middle of the monthly Syndicate vs. Baicai battle.
It will be 60RMB on the door, starts 10pm (11, more likely), support comes from Flo Eysler, Mr Soon (Baicai), Mael, Blackie, D-Rail, Elemental (The Syndicate). Jing DNB Mailing list dudes and dudettes keep an eye out for some giveaway action this week.
Set times
10.30-12: Flo Eysler
12-1: Elemental
1-2: Blackie and D-Rail
2-3.30: The Bug
3.30-4.30: Mael vs Saul
4.30-end: Mr Soon
ALSO
The Monday Re:Tox thing at Alpha has been canned, so don't go down there;
and, there was some sort of mis-understanding about the entrance thing for the Concord Dawn party last week. My email said it was going to be 50RMB to get in, and that it was going to include a free drink. No free drinks were on offer though, bugger. Good party but?!
Concord Dawn at China Doll
There have been plenty of international dnb visitors to Beijing over the last few months - up next, from New Zealand production duo Concord Dawn, we have Matt ... err ... Concord. Not to be confused with the TV thing Flight of the Conchords, of course. For more Concord Dawn information, check out their website)
The details, for you: China Doll (Tongli one), Thursday June 26th, from 10pm or so; 50RMB on the door, price includes a free drink; warming up is Mael, playing a dubstep set; Elemental will play a dnb set to close; there's a graffiti show happening (early on); New Zealanders get in for free (if you can prove it), alternatively, rock up wearing a NZ sports jersey (bonus style points for the beige '80s cricket outfit) and you're in with a grin.
Now that there are two China Dolls you'll need to make sure you get to the right one, or you'll be facing an evening of steady electro-house. To catch Concord Dawn in session, get to the original China Doll location, 2nd floor in Tongli Studios, Sanlitun.
This just in,
Junglecat plus Dead J, Pet Conspiracy, and DJ Munki Paul at Yugongyishan for International Day Against Drugs. Junglecat are a live band that play a mixture of jazz, breaks, and dnb (or what they call electronalogue) and are well known for putting on a good show; Dead J plays awesome dubby minimal bleepy sets of original material; and I'm not sure about the others except that the lead singer of Pet Conspiracy is supposed to be pretty smoking.
Starts at 9:30, 30RMB on the door, Club Yugongyishan (a little bit west of the Zhangzizhong Subway Station on line 5)
Also
Blackie has got a set at the Great Wall Beach Party on the 28th. More info about that at www.greatwallbeachparty.com.
Mael and Elemental at Alpha's Monday Re:tox, a sort of anything-goes chillout-continuation of the weekend. Alpha is up the alley opposite of the north gate of Workers' Stadium, past Xinjiang Red Rose. 9pm-12ish.
Blame / Syndicate vs. Baicai
Well hey, look at all this stuff - more international visitors, another of the excellent Syndicate vs. Baicai parties, plus more news of upcoming action in a variety of places. (And now with extra Syndicate Podcast Episode 3 download link.).
Syndicate Podcast Episode 3
This episode is again hosted by Blackie and D-Rail, and features a mix-set and chat from Elemental, plus a cameo from Syndicate Dan.
The webserver guys said the problem was the network between China and the US, the network-between-here-and-the-US guys said ... well I'm not too sure exactly what they said but no doubt they were pointing fingers at the webserver guys. Anyway...
First in line with the let's-rock-out-in-Beijing is Blame, a producer with old school cred untarnished by any sort of falling off type activities. From the proto-dnb classics on Moving Shadow, the atmospheric business on early Good Looking, to the more tech stuff on 720, and some smashers on Charge and Metalheadz, he's been doing his thing long-term, and is rated as a properly good DJ.
He'll play China Doll on Thursday the 12th of June. Blackie and D-Rail are on the support lineup, music starts around 11, it's free to get in before 12, an-n-n-n-n-nd you get 2-for-1 drinks between 10 and 12. How about that?
Here's the small print from the flyer:
Blame is one of the most innovative producers on the drum & bass scene - an accolade hard won over years of consistently breaking musical boundaries in an attempt to bring true innovation to the music that he loves. He’s been around from the beginning, and has released music on some of the biggest labels in the scene.
In recent years Blame’s hard work and skills have gained him a steadily rising profile, both as producer and as a DJ. Besides running his own imprint 720 Degrees, Blame has built strong bonds with Goldie’s label Metalheadz, and Charge Rec., both highly respected, yet different labels, showing once more Blame’s versatility.
As a DJ, Blame enjoys a reputation of excellent technical skills and extreme professionalism. This, combined with simply being one of the nicest characters in the scene, has lead to many invitations from promoters for him to return to their events.
There you go ... and on to the next.
Rumour has it that Baicai got the award for Best Beijing Promoters in the City Weekend Readers Choice Awards, and The Syndicate got Editors Pick in the same category. Did they deserve it? Is there jealousy between the two rival crews, or are they still Best Friends Forever? Get down to their next party and find out!
The party is on Saturday June 14th, starts at 11pm or so, and will cost 50RMB on the door. House and techno in the upstairs room, with dnb downstairs in the White Room.
On the drum and bass side of things you've got Blackie, Mael, Kay C, Shiva, and Sara C to check out, while Baicai have selected Flo Eysler and the Deep Space Mafia. It's looking like your last chance to see Sara C spin in Beijing, in itself a good reason to get down there.
Also upcoming
NZ dnb legends Concord Dawn at China Doll June 26 (just one of them but)
DJ Blackie has got a set at "The Beach Party," on June 28 (more info to come about that)
Elemental gets a guest set at Mael and Otra's Monday night Re:tox session at Alpha on June 30
Right, so there's plenty to keep you busy in Beijing next few month (if you can sort out the visa of course!). Shouts to everyone that came out to the charity thing at Tango last week, and also to all those who got stuck into the vodka at China Doll the night after that.
Subwave / ESS / Charity
To quote the flyer, "A series of nights partnering the finest in local Chinese and Chinese based producers and DJ's with key figures from other major electronic music scenes from around the work."
So, the lineup for the first of this series: local lad Meng Qi will truck in the equipment for his live set; top Russian dnb DJs/producers Subwave and Electrosoul System will both be playing DJ sets; and Blackie and D-Rail will be finishing things off for the early crew.
The deal: the party is on Thursday May 29; it will start sometime between 10-11pm; the cost is 50RMB before 12 midnight, 100RMB after; you get free vodka (?!) all night (for the authentic Russian feel I suppose?); t-shirts from indie brand Floso will be on sale at discount prices; and people that get there early will have a chance to get a piece of a D-Rail canvas.
ESS and Subwave are certainly two to check, coming through with releases on some big, big labels in the last year or so - should be a good night, watch the vodka though!
Also, on Wednesday the 28th there's a charity marathon at Tango, featuring DJs and VJs from the o2culture, Syndicate, Propaganda Unit, Baicai, SOS, Acupuncture crews. Starts at 8pm, finishes around 5am,and all doorsales and half all of the bar take is being donated to help people affected by the earthquake in Sichuan. Get in there and buy a few drinks, all for a good cause. (the Syndicate guys are on 11:00-12:00)
And if you didn't notice the link to the Syndicate 4th Birthday photos last week, have a look here!
Yen 4th Anniversary / Photos
Celebrate 4 years of Yen parties with a big one at Star Live this Friday night (May 23rd, 2008). Blackie is playing a dnb set 4-5am; also on the lineup are Dio, Mickey Zhang, Yangbing, Usami, Flo Eysler, and DJ @llen. Door sales are 100RMB, 70RMB if you buy a ticket in advance of the event. Find out more info at www.o2culture.com
And OH MY GOODNESS IT'S THE SYNDICATE 4TH BIRTHDAY PHOTOS. Three months after the event they have finally surfaced, click through to have a look at the madness. (Many thanks to Oak Taylor-Smith, photographer extraordinaire.)
Kasra & MC Wrec / Syndicate v. Baicai
It's busy next week, with big parties on Thursday and Saturday - for now I'll post the flyers, more details early next week.
Kasra and MC Wrec at China Doll, Thursday May 15th
Free before midnight, 50RMB after, dnb from 10pm-late.
Syndicate vs. Baicai at White Rabbit, Saturday May 17th
Syndicate dnb and jungle in the White Room, Baicai techno and house in the Red Room, 50RMB on the door, 11pm-late
Also coming up is the Yen 4th Birthday Party, which ought to be massive. Drum and bass music will get a blast courtesy of Blackie, other DJs on the night include Usami, Patrick Yu, and The Boat's DJ @llen.
Early May Action in Beijing
First things first, the MIDI Festival is still cancelled (mostly), but maybe moved to October. There is still some MIDI-related stuff going on, including some of the after-party type things.
At White Rabbit this Friday (May 2nd) we've got what was going to be one of the Yen Stage afterparties, but with a slightly different lineup that is not fully figured out yet (apart from the fact that it will be happening). Representing drum & bass and dubstep so far there's Blackie, Mael, and Elemental, and D-Rail with another one or two DJs to be added on there. In the other room at White Rabbit there will be techno/house DJs - so it's going to be a bit like one of the Syndicate vs. Baicai parties but with Yen instead of Baicai.
30RMB on the door, from 10pm or so.
On Wednesday May 7th Blackie and Elemental will play at The Boat's "Electronic Ferrytale" series. Free entry, and tunes from 10pm until 2am-ish. The Boat is a relatively new venue, and it is actually a boat. Check their Myspace page at http://www.myspace.com/theboatbeijing or Facebook if you're into that. Ahoy!
Extras
Extras, the first: new "Beijing Syndicate DNB podcast" available for download - here's a direct link (BJSYNDNB Podcast 2 download), permanent link is at mixes.jing-dnb.com
Extras, the second: The Syndicate and DJ Blackie are nominated for awards in a City Weekend magazine Nightlife thing - use a spare two minutes to cast your vote online at http://www.cityweekend.com.cn/bjsurvey. (unless you hate them, but who would hate them?)
Finally, clear the calendars - Kasra and MC Wrec will play China Doll on Thursday May 15th. Free before 12, 50RMB after that, Syndicate support DJs will be in effect, and you can get a wee preview of Kasra in the mix by downloading the "Keep it Critical" mix he did for Dogs on Acid last year. (Mix download links and tracklist are at Breaksblog, a site well worth checking for dnb mix downloads.)
Spectrasoul / MIDI
Here's a nice present from The Syndicate to all you Beijing drum and bass fans: Spectrasoul, Thursday April 24 at China Doll. Free entry! (Jing DNB mailing list members: watch your inbox for an extra little bonus.)
So, Spectrasoul ... in the words of the press release
SpectraSoul [Shogun Audio / Nu:directions / Critical Music / Renegade Recordings]
The last 12 months has seen SpectraSoul rise as one of the most exciting new talents within the drum and bass scene, and they continue to ride the crest of the wave of new producers.
Having spent the last year defining and refining their musical techniques, SpectraSoul have gained a reputation for bridging the gap between light & dark, hard & smooth, both in the studio and within their DJ sets. Last year saw the release of highly acclaimed "III Note Soul" and "Cherry Smoke" on Shogun:LTD, with both tracks gaining support from all the main players in the game and securing their place on the d&b map. Releases have snowballed from there on, with signings to Renegade Recordings, WestBay International, Soundtrax, a debut EP on Nu:Directions, and further releases on DJ Friction's Shogun Audio and SGN:LTD imprints.
Showcasing their talents on the turntables at some of the most prestigious venues throughout the UK and Europe, SpectraSoul have gained residencies at Shogun events in both London and Brighton, and prove to be a popular choice for promoters across the globe with an ever-growing booking schedule for 2008. Having gained solid DJ support from the likes of Friction, Fabio, DJ Marky, Klute, Logistics, Commix, Break and D-Bridge amongst others, the duo's sound has echoed around dance floors worldwide.
The coming months see releases from SpectraSoul on some of the biggest labels within drum and bass, collaborations with other pioneer producers, and some exciting remix projects to look forward to.With everything taken into account, 2008 is sure to be a big year for the duo.
Sounds good!
Syndicate Dan is saying that the free-ness is a thank-you to all the people that come out to the parties and make them so much fun, so there you go - if you've been to any of the parties, he's talking to you. (In turn, if you'd like to show The Syndicate some appreciation, you could give them a vote in the City Weekend Nightlife Awards - fill out the survey here.)
MIDI Festival
As at Tuesday April 22nd 2008, this years MIDI Festival has been cancelled (or delayed at the very least) due to "lack of security support from police" (and there are probably other political considerations in there as well). If I hear any different I will post info. This info was found on the always useful City Weekend website, and they had a link to the Sina website as well. (Links: MIDI on City Weekend | article on Sina website | Google translation of article on Sina website)
Terrible shame that, the MIDI Festival is always a good time and this year there was going to be three times as much dnb as usual.
And in other news: the Storm and MC Rage party at China Doll was smashing, a three-hour full-spectrum set from Storm just what the doctor ordered, and; I have, in person, confirmed the existence of the Syndicate 4th birthday photos, thereby moving one step closer to getting them online, perhaps in time for Christmas!
Storm / MC Rage at China Doll
Get more information about this party on the DJ Storm and MC Rage minisite.
Syndicate/Baicai Part 5
The fifth engagement of the Baicai and Syndicate battle sees reinforcements entering the fray, with the introduction of new musical styles and live performances from electronic tough guys Goth-Trad and Dead J. 2 rooms of action, two live electronic performances, deep down underground.
So yeah, it's the regular (and smashing) Syndicate vs. Baicai deal, with added extras. It's billed as a dubstep special, so in addition to the Baicai house-y/techno-y sound, the Syndicate dnb action (Blackie, D-Rail, Elemental, Kay-C this time), and a dubstep set from Mael, you get a live set of dubstep from Goth-Trad (all the way from Tokyo) and a live set of minimalist dub/techno from Dead J (all the way from Beijing).
Goth-Trad has been doing the damn thing in the UK dubstep scene recently - check his website www.gothtrad.com for more info about him; Dead J has got some wicked tunage on his Myspace www.myspace.com/shaoyp, check that out.
60RMB gets you in to this one, and the first 100 people to buy a ticket will get a free mix CD. 10pm til late, at White Rabbit, Friday April 11th!
The DJ Storm and MC Rage party at China Doll is all go for April the 17th at China Doll, and next week I'll tell you how to get in for free. Until then, here's some more Myspace linkage - DJ Storm, MC Rage.
Also of note: Sara C's regular thing at Nanjie, Thursday nights from 10:30 or so - occasional guest DJs, dnb and breakbeat and things in between, free to get in.

Mid-March dnb in Beijing
Not much to report for this weekend, but plenty on next week, with the highlight being top UK talent Matrix and Futurebound - read on for the infos...
Matrix and Futurebound, Thursday March 13th at Vics
Producers of some fine, fine tunes recently (Skyscraper, American Beauty bootleg rmx), and the latest international dnb talent brought over by The Syndicate.
This party is part of their 'Universal Truth' LP tour, so here's some press release shizzle about that for you
Already tipped by many as a contender for Drum and Bass album of the year, the hotly anticipated ‘Universal Truth’ long player is finally unleashed.
Matrix & Futurebound deliver a uniquely accessible array of musically accomplished club destroyers that are Phatter than Rick Waller, smoother than Britney Spear’s !!?!! and deeper than Bill Gate’s pockets.
It's a full night of dnb, with Syndicate support from Mael and Kay C, 50RMB gets you entrance and a free drink. Doors open 10ish, dnb from 11ish (I guess!), will continue until late. Keep an eye on your email all you mailing list members, some freebies are incoming.
Beijing Over Zero, Friday March 14th at White Rabbit
Get down to White Rabbit to check a live set plus VJ action from Delacrew, some Spanish fellows who have recently arrived in Beijing.
After their European tour, Delacrew joins Asia to offer us the best fighting and powerful drum&bass and visuals produced in Spain.
Also playing are Mael, Sara C, and Thome Tomato (I thinkThome Tomato is a breaks DJhouse DJ, but anyway). 40RMB, starts at 10pm.
If you were thinking about checking out the Dave Seaman thing at Starlive on March 14th, make sure to hang about until the end of it for a dnb surprise. Blackie is playing the final set of the night up there, but don't expect to hear anyone else play dnb up there. Tickets likely to be expensive, and that's all the info I've got about that at the moment.
And lastly, will have some photos from the Syndicate 4th Birthday party on the site soon!

Syndicate vs. Baicai, Saturday Jan 26
Updated with set times, see below
Righty-o you lot, next scheduled dnb hitout is at White Rabbit on Saturday January 26th. It's the Syndicate's turn to run the Live room upstairs, and the Baicai boys are doing their dirty, dirty thing downstairs in the White room.
Lineup for drum and bass is Elemental, Blackie, Kay C, and Sara C (that's likely the order of appearance as well), things will be starting quietly at 10:30ish and getting much louder once the restaurant dudes next door finish up.
Downstairs you can check house-y and techno-y sounds, with Yoshitoshi and and Azuli affiliate DJ Kai doing a guest set, along with Baicai residents Flo Eysler, David Lassere, and Tom Foolery.
Live room dnb set times
10:30-12:00 - Elemental
12:00-1:30ish - Kay C
1:30ish-2:30ish - Blackie
2:30ish-3:30ish - Sara C
3:30ish-close - any DJ still standing
So, that's it for the moment. If you're on the mailing list keep an eye on your inbox for some special Syndicate 4th birthday party deals. Oh yes, the Syndicate 4th Birthday party - it's going to be at China Doll, upstairs they've got Logistics and Cyantific from Hospital Records (woo!) plus D Rail, Blackie, and Elemental. China Doll first floor is going to be a mixup, with specially chosen reggae, dubstep, and house DJs taking over.

DJ Marky, January 12th
THE VENUE HAS CHANGED, THE PRICE HAS CHANGED, NO MORE OPEN BAR, THE LINEUP IS THE SAME STILL
New venue: Song Music Bar and Kitchen (www.songbeijing.cn)
New price: 50元 for everyone, no more open bar.
NEW UPDATE! (4pm Saturday January 12th)
Everything else is still the same, Marky is on at 1am. Everything is a bit different now! Marky is on at 2am, Elemental and Terra D are on at 1am, Wordy has cancelled completely, and there's a pre-booked house DJ from 9pm-1am. This is mostly due to the venue change - the house dude had already been booked, so he has to get a play.
New Years greetings to all readers, all the best for 2008.
Next big thing lined up is Brazilian superstar DJ Marky on January 12. It's at Song Music Bar in The Place, a classy-looking new spot. Tickets are 50元, and Wordy, Elemental, and Terra D are taking care of the support DJ/MC activities.
February should be fun as well, with Logistics and Cyantific from Hospital Records flying over for the Syndicate's 4th birthday party on February 16, stay tuned for more information about that!

Yen Countdown 07/08
Set times: You can hear dnb at the Yen Countdown from 3:30ish til close, strictly for the stay-up-late crew!
Monday December 31st - the annual Yen Countdown party. Mickey Zhang, Patrick Yu, Dio, Yangbing, Flo Eysler are all playing, and dnb is represented on the night with a set from Elemental. You can get presale tickets for 70RMB from Apertivo (and maybe some other spots too), door sales will be 100RMB but don't bank on many being available. Pro-tip: avoid the perennial huge queues at the door by getting in there a bit early!
You can get all the info about this party (including a map) from the o2 culture website.
'Twas a very merry Christmas party at China Doll by the way, with quality tunes from all involved and a big set from Pitch-in and MC Taiwan, plus a raucous crowd inside. Jungle Bells DNB Xmas party
Here's one for junglists sticking it out in Beijing over Christmas - Jungle Bells at China Doll, Monday December 24th. Yeah, it's a Monday night, but you're not working on Christmas Day are you? (Are you?)
Pitch-in and MC Taiwan are flying in from France to provide the Christmas treats, both no strangers to Beijing. Pitch-in is well-known for his manic approach to DJing - quick mixing, 3-deck action, multi-genre mashup sets, and general high-energy antics - check his myspace profile for more info.
Meng Qi is playing a live set on the night as well, and backing them all up are Syndicate DJs Mael and Elemental. The party is from 9pm til 5am, it's free entry, and China Doll has a sweet sound system. (Mailing list dudes check your mail over the next few days to find out how you can get a free drink.)

December dnb action in Beijing
Right, the website maintenance went smoothly enough and now the website is back online with a rundown of your options for a bit of festive frolicking during December
On Saturday the 8th The Syndicate is taking on the Upstepper Sound System at White Rabbit - Upstepper in the upstairs room (makes sense I suppose), and the Syndicate down in the basement. To say "upstairs room" is a bit misleading - both the rooms are downstairs, but one is further downstairs than the other. Anyway.
The drum and bass will be starting 12ish (avoiding any annoying volume restrictions), but get in early and check the reggae dudes doing their thing. Kay C from Hong Kong's Magnetic Soul crew is playing a guest set, and Syndicate regulars Blackie, D-Rail, Elemental, and Terra D will be rolling out a selection covering old school jungle all the way through to upfront freshness. 40元 gets you entry to both rooms, and it's possible that White Rabbit offers some 2-for-1 specials early in the night but don't quote me on that.
On Thursday the 13th there's a party at Yugongyishan called Clash of the Underground, top billing goes to Yin Ts'ang and Young King (two hip-hop acts) but the promoter is saying there's going to be a bit of dnb (either live or dropped during Wordy's set) so if that sounds good to you get down there and check it out. 30元, from 9pm.
The Saturday after that (Dec 15) you can catch DJ Wordy and DJ Blackie spinning at the Terminal party at the Amber event space. It's advertised as being from 9pm until 2am, so maybe a good one to get to early-ish. Also on the lineup are Dio and Usami. Full information at the o2culture website.
If you're in town for Christmas make sure to check out the party at China Doll on the 24th of December. Headlining this are Pitch-In and MC Taiwan from France, and any other dnb DJs/MCs still in town over Christmas are likely to be on the lineup as well. Forecast: messy!
Also in December, the Yen Countdown party (December 31st). Dnb is represented courtesy of Elemental, it's being held at the 706 Space, and the promoters are saying 2,000+ people. More info about that one later in the month.
Finally, make sure you're in town on January the 12th - DJ Marky will be back for another visit, no MC Stamina this time though.

Website maintenance
The website is going offline for a bit this Saturday, the webhost is moving servers, blah-de-blah, etc., etc.
So best check back on Friday to see if anything is going on this weekend - so far not much though!
Late November, early December
Last week's Syndication was a good one, with an excellent set from Junglecat, and some nice suprise cameos from the 010 Project and Kay C. It could have been much better without the last-minute cancellation by the Beijing Live Hiphop Experience and the soundboy who kept turning the volume down. Nice.
Anyway, no scheduled dnb action this weekend. A lot of junglists also dig some dubstep, so if that's your thing check out Yen Black at Starlive on the 24th - Mael and Youngkin are playing a set from 11-12. More info about that at on the o2 Culture website.
Coming up early December is an Upstepper vs. Syndicate soundclash ting at White Rabbit with plenty of guest action - more info about that in a few weeks, in the meantime here's the flyer.
Boo!
Junglecat at Syndication, Saturday 17th November
This weekend we've got Syndication at Yugongyishan on Saturday the 17th of November. Syndication is a mixup event, usually featuring differing styles of music played by live bands and DJs, and always with a little dnb in there.
Alongside Junglecat (live jazzy dnb/breakbeat/hiphop) there's also the Beijing Live Hiphop Experience (hiphop, duh!) and DJ sets from L'una Otra (mashup), D-Rail (dnb), and Elemental (dnb).
It's at the new Yugongyishan (see map on flyer), will start at 10pm, and cost 30RMB to get in.
L'una Otra will be on first, followed by the bands, with the dnb DJs on after that.

Syndicate vs. Baicai at White Rabbit
On Friday November the 9th the Syndicate and Baicai are taking over the two-level White Rabbit on Lucky Street. D-Rail, Blackie, and Mael will be bussin' drum & bass and dubstep from 10pm (or thereabouts). 50元 gets you in, while you're there you can also see Ludo V, Tom Foolery, and Flo Eysler playing "techy and housy" in the other room.
And! if you're itching to get up to something on the Thursday night as well, Blackie will be playing White Rabbit that night as part of the Clash of the Underground series.

6M Studio parties cancelled, more November action
The 6M Studio space was due to host a variety of parties over the next month - Ken Ishii, Beijing Techno Allstars, as well as a Syndicate vs. Upstepper soundclash. Unfortunately the venue has cancelled the lot due to double-bookings (or some other similar but no less sketchy reason).
There's still plenty of other parties in November: 8th November Blackie has got a set at White Rabbit; 9th November the Syndicate take over Room 1 at White Rabbit; and on the 17th of November there's a big Syndication party at Yugongyishan with Junglecat, Beijing Live Hiphop Experience, Sara C, and L'una O'tra.

Yen Fetish Halloween / Clash of The Underground
The always popular Yen Fetish Halloween party is on this weekend (2007-10-27), and DJ Blackie will be playing a dnb set for the closer. Mind that you don't go to the wrong place though, they've changed the venue to Arena Club.
Full information can be found on the o2 Culture website, but to summarise: doors open 9pm Saturday October 27th, advance tickets cost 70RMB, and door sales cost 100RMB (if available).
The DJ lineup for the party is Dio, Patrick Yu, Gao Hu, Blackie, the Mug Up Phonies will be playing a live set, and Yuan Yuan and Douzi will be doing a fire dance performance.
The organisers of the Clash of The Underground party tell me that there will definitely be a bit of dnb played on the night, and you'll also hear hip-hop, dubstep, grime, and a live set from Project 010. Project 010 is made up from most of the Junglecat band members and MC Youngkin.

Uptown Steppers / HBH video
This Saturday (2007-10-21) is the Uptown Steppers party at White Rabbit, "a night dedicated to heavy bass" featuring a lineup of DJs playing dubstep, dub, minimal techno, and drum and bass. Representing dnb on the night is Sara C, also playing are Mael, Steve Barker, Tom Foolery, and David Lassere.
It's 30元 on the door, and will start around 10 or so. White Rabbit is on Lucky Street (Haoyun Jie), and is toward the south end of all the other restaurants and bars.
And, here are some lovely HBH graphics that you'll get a look at during the Nu:tone & MC Wrec gig at Vics on Thursday (2007-10-18) (If you can't see anything then you are probably in China, where Youtube is in trouble with the net filter for whatever reason.)

September action * MORE UPDATES*
Another update to Nanluoguxiang Street Party.
There are a few interesting parties coming up over the next couple of weeks, and another visit from Hospital Records has recently been confirmed for October.
Firstly, on the 15th and the 16th there's a street party in Nanluoguxiang. Attractions include food, fashion, art, and on the 16th you can hear a little dnb music there courtesy of Mael, Elemental, Sarah C, and Plastered T-Shirts. The turntables are getting set up in a shop so it's not going to be amazingly loud, but you'll be able to hear a few beats and shop for some nice t-shirts from 4pm-10pm. There's been a bit of trouble with permits for the event so it's going to shut down a bit earlier than planned. So instead it's: 2ish 'til 6:30 - Mael/Elemental/Sarah C; 6:30pm Fashion Show (Plastered T-Shirts' new range); 7:30pm - 9ish: Mael/Elemental/Sarah C. Check the map on the Plastered website.
A new club called White Rabbit is opening on Friday the 21st, and the Syndicate Crew will be taking care of the second room there (Main room has Ludo V and Patrick Yu playing 'landmark minimal tech sets'). Get down there to check sets from Blackie and Elemental, Young Kin on the mic - cost/times still to be confirmed. White Rabbit is on Lucky Street (Hao Yun Jie), the big group of bars and restaurants close by to the north-west corner of Chaoyang Park. You can get there by following Liang Ma Qiao Lu east from the Kempinski Hotel - it's two blocks from the hotel, 1 block east of the south end of Nu Ren Jie, south side of Liang Ma Qiao Lu. (City Weekend White Rabbit info.)
Also coming up is the October holiday, with the Modern Sky music festival taking place in Haidian Park on October 2, 3, and 4. Modern Sky is "a renowned Chinese indie label," and the festival is set to feature 120 bands, headlined by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. They must have a dance music area in there somewhere as well - drum and fans will be able to catch Mael, Blackie, D-Rail, and Elemental playing sets at various times. Updates on set times to follow, the festival is 60元 per day, or 120元 for a three-day pass. Links: Modern Sky (Chinese language); Modern Sky Festival site; electronic music stage lineup
And finally, mark October 18th in your diary because Vics will be getting another visit from Hospital Records - this time Nu:tone and MC Wrec, touring to promote the excellent new Back of Beyond album.
Long time No Update
Yes, long time no update, sorry about that! There's still dnb going on in Beijing though, the next party is on Friday August 31st at Mao Livehouse in the Drum Tower/Nanluoguxiang area.
Before we get into that, here are the photos from Klute and Stamina MC at Vics, some great shots (and some funnies) in there. Again, big up Mr. Oak Taylor-Smith for the photo set.
Syndication at Mao Livehouse
Three bands at this months Mao Livehouse Syndication - The Beijing Live Hip Hop Experience are back again after a high-energy show last month, African drum troupe Mbongui are set to drum it up for your listening pleasure, and 4-piece jazz outfit Les Enfants Terribles will be doing their thing as well. Don't forget the dnb either, Elemental and Mael will be opening and closing the night, and Terra D will be hosting.
Friday August 31, 30元 on the door (early), will increase to 40元 later in the night (will clarify this), starts at 9pm, bands on from 10pm or so.
Also, will have photos from the Klute and Stamina MC party at Vics online in the next few days, some great shots from Mr Oak Taylor-Smith.

Syndication at Yugongyishan, Friday July 20, 2007
This is mostly a repeat of the last information, but it gets a reload because it's the last Syndication at Yugongyishan before it is demolished and everybody should go!
Syndication at Yugongyishan, Friday July 20th - the last dnb you'll hear at Yugongyishan before it gets knocked down. As per usual it's dnb DJs alongside interesting live acts. This time the live interest comes courtesy of regulars Junglecat, and the as yet unnamed Zhang brothers combination - Yen regular Mickey Zhang providing the beats from his Mac/Ableton live setup, his brother adding atmosphere with the Chinese harp/zither (Guchang, to be precise). You might have seen them at one of the Terminal parties, or the NO+CH festival - a great set combining traditional Chinese instrumentation with modern technology.
And, because it's the last one, you get a loaded lineup of DJs: Blackie, Mael, Elemental (and maybe D-Rail). Same price and time as usual - that's 30元, from 9pm until late late late.

DNB BBQ / Beach party
Drum and bass barbecue action at Q Bar
The Syndicate is taking over Q Bar on Sunday the 8th of July, providing sunshine sounds to accompany some barbecue action. On the rooftop Blackie, D-Rail, and Elemental will be taking turns at spinning the jazzy and mellow sound of dnb while the sun is out. Inside you can hear some eclectic/freestyle sets and find out what drum and bass DJs like to listen to when they're not playing drum and bass.
Starts at 4pm, free to get in, barbecue food by Q Bar.
DNB BBQ update: DJ Mael is added to the lineup, plus another few guests, and maybe a special special guest if he's not too tired from a long plane ride.
The barbecue will provide a good chance to work on your tan before next week's Great Wall beach party, where you'll be able to check a dnb set from Blackie (just back from playing in Tibet!). There's more beach party information at www.myspace.com/greatwallbeachparty, it's on the 14th, and tickets are approximately 250元.

Syndication at Yugongyishan
Friday June 29 is the date for what will probably be the second-to-last Syndication at Yugongyishan - the venue is due for demolition, exact date unspecified. So what the flyer says and get it while the getting is good. It's a fresh lineup, with percussion focus from the Gudian Soundsystem (percussion vs. computers), a UK Garage set from Phillix 66, MC action courtesy of Webber, and dnb support from Elemental and D-Rail.
Update, jazzy-breakbeat-electronic-dnb band Junglecat will also be playing, get in there.
Update 2, now with 100% less Webber and Phillix 66 who can't make it.

Long time no update
R.I.P. Zub, now in the midst of a transformation into a pizza restaurant. It had better be good pizza!
So, not much dnb action the last few weeks. Not too much dnb action in the next few weeks either, but after that it's back into it with Syndication at Yugongyishan on the 29th of June. If you've been past that way in the last few days you might have noticed that the main entrance to that area is all boarded up, but you can still get in by the Chun Xiu Lu entrance (turn right at the traffic lights to the west of the main entrance, go north up Chun Xiu Lu, look for the gate past the brick buildings and before the hot pot restaurant.

Corrections galore!
The theme of this update is "Correct the mistakes," and they certainly shall be corrected.
First, the Syndication party is at Yugongyishan on Friday the 27th, not the Thursday. That's even better, as it's not a school night (well, for most people). The lineup has been finalised - main act number one is a mashup thing, (MC Webber and some of the guys from the Beijing Live Hiphop Experience band [cancelled]) with musicians and percussionist jamming over Meng Qi's beats and bass. Very nice. Main act number two is DJ Siesta from Shanghai crew Phreaktion. She's the one that runs dnb things down Shanghai-way, so you can expect a firing set from her. Backing that lot up are your good friends The Syndicate. Tickets are 30元, and there will be music from 9:30pm or so.
There is still some dnb at Yugongyishan on the Thursday as part of the 2db party. Karibdis will be playing a dnb set from around 1am, before that is psytrance and breaks. That party is 30元 as well.
And finally, there will also be a bit of dnb at 2 Koleagas on Friday night as well (not Thursday) - you can catch a DJ set from Nine Elms up there.
Oh yes, Sundays on Top. The popular Sunday afternoon rooftop session at Kokomo (old Top Club) is starting again now that the weather is looking better. Sundays on Top host Patrick Yu has decided that drum and bass is needed on Top, so Elemental will be playing some nice beats for a sunny day (fingers crossed). Check out the Sundays on Top MySpace for more detailed information about that, at the moment all you need to know is that it's on the roof of Kokomo in Sanlitun, this Sunday [29th], from 4pm.
Blink interviewed Mr. Elemental as well, you can read it on the That's BJ Nightlife forum.
Also, the MIDI Festival is next week - their website www.midifestival.com has got some of the info but isn't fully up to date. Snow and Elemental will be playing some beats on Friday the 4th from 12-1pm, and Wordy will be playing a dnb set at 5pm on the 2nd as well as a hip hop set on the 1st.

Syndicate DNB / Jungle at Zub April 21st
It's time for more jungle action at Zub - Saturday April 21 sees another big jungle set from Elemental and D-Rail, as well as upfront and dubwise selection from the other DJs on the lineup. The last one was wicked, so if you missed it you definitely need to get down to check this one.
Doors from 9pm, it's free to get in, and you can enjoy 2-for-1 specials on selected drinks before midnight. D-Rail and Elemental will play from 11:30-1, Blackie, Mael, and Karibdis are also playing, and you've got Terra-D, Webber, and Essention on the microphones.
Also, Goldie and MC Lowqui will be back in May (at Vics!). Goldie has recently had a mix on BBC's Essential Mix Show and it's well worth a listen - check Breaks Blog for the download.

Right, so not much happening this weekend - you'll have to wait til the next. Should be worth the wait, though: you can catch another jungle set from Elemental & D-Rail as well as upfront and otherwise beats from Blackie, Karibdis, and Mael.
So yeah, for now all you need to know is that the date is April 21, it's a Saturday night, there's going to be a bad jungle set, and it's free to get in. Set times will be posted closer to the date, along with other information.
Also coming up - another Syndication at Yugongyishan (time is slipping for Yugongyishan, the wreckers are on the way), some summer sun action on the roof of Kokomo in San Li Tun, and in May, the MIDI festival and the return of Goldie and MC Lowqui.
Syndication at Yugongyishan
This month it's on Thursday the 29th, starts at 9pm, 30元 to get in, and it's at Club Yugongyishan as per normal..
The main attraction for this party is definitely Junglecat - a four-piece band with vocalist that play a hybrid sound of drum and bass, jazz, breakbeat, and electronic music. The band is backed up by DJs playing drum and bass and a little bit of whatever else sounds good.

Plenty of things to do in March
Lots of drum and bass things to do in March - here's your summary, in ascending date order for your reading and scheduling convenience.
Francophone Music Festival
Friday March 9 at Nhu Lounge, close to the South Gate of Lido Park
Special music festival with acts from countries where they speak French - they've got Belgian rock 'n' roll, Canadian folk, French hip-hop, and, of special interest to dnb fans, a set from DJ Science (Congo Natty Crew) and MC Big Red (Raggasonic). Science and Big Red will be playing the closing set.
It starts at 8pm and it's free to get in - but with a twist! You can get guaranteed entry by picking up a pass from the French Cultural Center at 18 GongTi XiLu. I guess that means that if it looks like it is getting full up they'll reserve space for people who have made the effort to pick up a pass.
Find directions to the venue at www.nhulounge.com.
Artwalk Beijing
Saturday March 10 around 798 Dashanzi Art District
Syndicate DJs Dan and Elemental will be spinning some laidback beats at the Artwalk Cocktail reception from 7:30pm-9:30pm. Check www.artwalkbeijing.com for full info. The Artwalk lot have organised special opening hours of 6-8pm at some of the more interesting galleries in 798, they've got guides to help show you around, and they will finish things off with a bit of cocktail action - a good excuse for dnb fans to check out the 798 area, or a good excuse for art fans to catch a little dnb, whichever way around works best for you.
Syndicate DNB at Zub
Saturday March 17, Zub Wudaokou
The Syndicate's regular monthly party, free to get in, 2-for-1 drink specials from 10-12. The vodka sponsorship seems to have run out, unfortunately - previous sponsors 42 Below got bought by Bacardi and the local distributors got the sack. Too bad!
Party starts at 10pm, DJs Blackie, Karibdis, D-Rail, Elemental; MCs Webber and Terra D, plus guests.
Get directions to Zub at www.lushbeijing.com
"I love EU"
Saturday March 24, Club Tango
"Celebrating 50 years of the European Union - 5 up and coming live electronic artists from the EU." Drum and bass fans can catch a live set from French native Tambourbattant, Syndicate DJ Blackie will be playing the closing set, and there's the other 4 up-and-comers to check out as well.
There's also a Syndication due sometime this month, will post up info about that as it arrives - for now I can say that it should feature the return of Junglecat..
Syndication at Yugongyishan, Friday February 23 2007
Yugongyishan opens again on the 23rd, with live jazz from Enfant Terrible, drum and bass from the Syndicate crew, and a special guest appearance from up and coming French dnb DJ K-Mi who just happens to be holidaying in Beijing right now.

Scratch Perverts at Mix, Sunday February 4 2007
Three-man scratch team Scratch Perverts are playing at Mix this Sunday night, and aside from being top-rated turntablists they also tend to throw a bit of dnb in the mix. Not the regular type of DJ set, the three of them play at the same time, using two turntables (maybe CD players, even) each.
The party is at Mix Club, February the 4th. That's a Sunday night! Long weekend! No mention of ticket prices, which means it will probably be 50元 on the door, and maybe 100元 if it packs out. Mix has got a new downstairs section, but I'm not sure if they've been allowed to open it again yet.

Syndication at Yugongyishan, Syndicate Radio
Well, the Syndicate are certainly making sure there is plenty of drum and bass in the clubs these days. It's already been a month since the last Syndication, so time for another!. This month it's on Thursday the 25th, starts at 9pm, 30元 to get in, and it's at Club Yugongyishan as per normal..
It's billed as Syndicate Allstars, which, in this case, means that you will be treated to a fine mixture of musicians and DJs: David Mitchell returns to jazz it up with the guitar and various other strange instruments (he was wicked at the last Syndication, by the way), Miko from Junglecat will have his drums set up, and the clarinet player from the Beijing Live Hiphop Experience (sorry don't know his name) will be doing his thing; Mael will play dubstep beats, Blackie will spin dnb, and no doubt there are some other DJs and MCs on the lineup as well.

Syndicate 3rd Anniversary Weekend
To celebrate their third birthday the Syndicate have organised a weekender: more DJs from Hospital Records on Friday the 19th; and a an all-nighter at Zub on the 20th.
Tomahawk and MC Wrec at Club Fusion, January 19th 2007
Tomahawk is the resident DJ at one of the world’s most popular monthly Drum & bass nights “Hospitality” in London, and is well known for remixing, mastering and producing Drum & Bass music. Best known for his track 'Until Dawn', he’s produced music with the likes of High Contrast and Dynamite MC, and also manages Hospital Records.
MC Wrec has been MC’ing for 10 years in the Hip hop and Drum & bass scenes notably as the frontman for the award winning live drum & bass group, London Elektricity.
There's more open bar action at this party. The kind folks at Club Fusion may have learned a lesson from the last time they let drum and bass heads drink for free (always a mistake ;]), and have put a time limit on it, 10pm-3am.
Tickets are 80RMB, available on the door, and include the open bar.
The Syndicate have also employed the skills of DJ Usami for this party, so expect a bit of breakbeat action to accompany the drum and bass from the headliners, Wordy, D-Rail and Elemental. Webber and Terra-D will be on the mic, Haobuhao VJs on the visuals.
Classics and Anthems All-Nighter at Zub, January 20th 2007
Wudaokou is where it all started for the Syndicate, so it's only fitting they head back there for the second night of the birthday weekend. It's a stacked lineup, featuring just about everyone who has ever played at a Syndicate party.
Music policy for this one is strictly anthems and classics, and it will be an all-nighter for sure. Meng Qi will be doing his live performance to start things off, and you can enjoy half-price 42 Below Vodka all night. The full lineup is Mael, Blackie, Meng Qi, Elemental, D-Rail, Dan, Karibdis, Webber, and Terra-D, and it's free to get in.
Expect to hear the best tunes from the last 10 years or so - jungle, techstep, rollers, the lot.
Syndicate Radio
If you're online at 11pm Beijing time on the 10th of January you might like to tune in to webradio.ombilikal.org to catch the latest Syndicate Radio session: a live recording from Club Yu Gong Yi Shan, featuring Elemental, Mael, Youthman, MC Webber, and MC Kin. 11pm is roughly 4pm in France, 3pm GMT.

Syndication / DJ Nymfo / New Years
Syndication is back at Yugongyishan this Thursday with more variety for your ears. First, and most important for fans of drum and bass is DJ Nymfo, Holland's top-rated drum and bass DJ. He's an organiser of the very popular Red Zone parties in Eindhoven and regularly invites big-name DJs to play guest slots. For this reason Nymfo has a tasty collection of dubs to play, as well as some of his own new tunes. Check www.redzoneheadquarters.com for more information about him and the Red Zone crew.
Also on the lineup is well-known guitarist David Mitchell, who will be adding jazz vibes to some of the DJ sets.
Last, but not least, Elemental, Mael, and DJ Wordy will be playing as well - dnb from Elemental and Wordy, dubstep and other bits from Mael.
Doors open at 9pm on Thursday the 28th, it will cost 30元 at the door.
Also this week - the Yen New Years party on Sunday the 31st. Drum and bass fans can get down to a DJ Wordy dnb set, check www.o2culture.com for more information about that.

'BASS' at Zub, Redeyes & MC Youthman at Club Fusion
Bit of a decision for Beijing drum and bass fans to make this Saturday night - Zub or Club Fusion? Maybe both?
BASS at Zub, Saturday 16th December
Pretty much the same deal as the jungle party at Zub last month, except this time the sponsorship money kindly provided by 42 Below is getting spent on extra subs to make the ZUB turbosound even more bass-heavy. Things will be starting off around 9pm with a dub set from Dan, followed by drum & bass from Elemental, D-Rail, and Blackie. It's free to get in to this party, and you will enjoy the half-price 42 Below Vodka, oh yes you will.
Redeyes and MC Youthman at Club Fusion, Saturday 16th December
Redeyes and MC Youthman, widely considered the best DJ and MC combo from the red hot French Drum & Bass scene hit the capital.
Redeyes is best known as a producer of the more jazzy style of drum and bass, and has got his name on to quite a few 12" releases this year. Get down to Fusion to check him and MC Youthman, support from DJ Wordy, Blackie, Mael, and MC Webber. 80RMB gets you entrance plus the open bar deal enjoyed by many at the last dnb party at Club Fusion.

They're continuing the live theme - it's hip-hop this time, with the Beijing Live Hip Hop Experience (MCs Webber and Essention with drummer, bass player, guitar, and clarinet) as well as DJ Wordy who will be playing a scratch/hip-hop/dnb set. And of course there's some drum and bass in there with Mael, Elemental, and D-Rail ready to do their thing.
The last Syndication was a good one, with some excellent interplay between live percussion and samplers, sequencers, and singers. Look forward to hearing some band vs. DJ action at this next one.
Starts at 10pm, tickets are 30元. It's on a Saturday so the party will go until late (or early, depending on how long you stay) as well, no excuses about work the next day!

Syndication at Yugongyishan
Syndication is a new night at Yugongyishan, it will be mostly drum and bass, but with the more interesting parts of other genres thrown in from time to time to spice it up. Future plans include getting 2005 and 2006 Chinese DMC Champ DJ Wordy to do his battle set, and a little dubstep action. The first one though, is a live dnb special.
Get down early to this one to check out Meng's live PA, stick around after that to see what happens when you throw a singer, a drummer and a DJ together (no one is quite sure what will happen here), and if you're up for a late one then there's more dnb to come after that.
Thursday 28th of September at Yugonyishan, it's free to get in before 11pm, and 30元 after that, the lineup includes Jessica & Miko from Junglecat, Meng Qi from ChinaVibe, and Syndicate DJs and MCs Webber, Terra-D, Mael, Elemental, D-Rail, and Blackie.

Andy C & MC GQ at Cargo
Hope you've got Friday off work, because it will be a big night this Thursday as Andy C and MC GQ hit Cargo Club for their only show in China.
Andy C is the owner of Ram Records, and his 'Nightlife' series of mix CDs are a good representation of what is happening in the UK clubs at the moment. He's perennially rated as the best drum and bass DJ, playing a wicked selection and showing superior mixing skills.
MC GQ is one of the legendary MCs of drum and bass music - he's rated highly by DJs, and that's saying something!
Date: Thursday the 21st of September 2006
Tickets: should be 50元 on the door, get down there between 11 and 12 to avoid waiting or getting charged a higher price for the ticket.
Support DJs/MCs: to be confirmed (if any)
Another interesting party coming up next Thursday (28th) - Syndication at Yugongyishan, the first time they've had a full drum and bass night in there. Will have the flyer and lineup details for that soon.
There is also supposed to be a Beach Party this weekend, featuring a dnb set from DJ Blackie, as well as other DJs like Patrick Yu and Yang Bing - you might want to check with the organisers before buying a ticket though. It's at Shang Hai Guan, a very nice spot where the Great Wall meets the sea, but it has already been postponed once, and the promoter is currently out of the country.

Goldie & MC LowQui Venue Change!!!!
Just got word that Goldie and MC LowQui will be playing at Mix instead of Cargo. No jokes (unfortunately), this comes straight from the mouth of the promoters.
Word is that the renovations at Cargo haven't yet been completed, so no chance of a decent party there.
Please spread the word, Mix Club, not Cargo.

Bukem & Conrad @ Cargo
4th March 2006, LTJ Bukem & MC Conrad at Cargo, west gate of Workers Stadium (GongTi XiMen, close by to Babyface), with Elemental on the warmup.
No excuses to miss this one - a prime time Saturday night gig in a big club in the middle of the city, need the massive PA system at Cargo be mentioned?
February action
There was a Syndicate party at Top Club on the 10th - bit late to update the website about that (Sorry!) but email list people got the word, along with news of the Bukem/Conrad thing - Saturday 4th of March at Cargo courtesy of Lychee Promotions (nice work Nee Bing), might be 100RMB on the door but that has yet to be confirmed.
Bukem rumours confirmed
LTJ Bukem and MC Conrad set to play Beijing Saturday March 4th, venue / price to be confirmed.
Bukem and Conrad have long been one of the world's premier drum and bass DJ/MC duos, and true fans of the music won't miss this party for anything! A team since the mid-90s, Bukem and Conrad bring musical vibes to the club, a change from the more common heavier styles of drum and bass.

Rewind @ Cargo
On Saturday the 7th of January Cargo has DJ Pitch In and MC Taiwan from France, with support from Mael. As most of the bigger Beijing clubs are a bit scared of drum and bass, the music is likely to be mainly breaks, but there should be at least a little bit of d'n'b thrown in there and it's an excuse to check out Cargo.
Saturday 7th January, tickets 50元 on the door (IIRC), Cargo is next to Babyface at 8 Gong Ti Xi Lu (West side of Workers Stadium).
End of year dnb action
Looks like there's not much on dnb-wise over the new year period. The next Syndicate party is on the 12th of January though (lineup yet to be announced), so not too long to wait.
